A Surprise Proposal in the St. Albert River Valley

There are surprise proposals, and then there are “she absolutely knows something is up but we’re all committed to the bit” surprise proposals.

And can I just say... Iconic.

This gorgeous proposal took place in the St. Albert River Valley, which, if you have never been there for photos, is just another way Alberta loves to show off.

The soft light, the trees, the winding paths, the river nearby, the whole romantic little nature moment. It was the perfect backdrop for a photographing a proposal that was sweet, emotional, and just the right amount of sneaky.

He had a custom ring made for her, which already deserves its own tiny round of applause because hello, effort. Thoughtfulness. Intentionality. We love a man with a plan.

Now, was she suspicious? Yes. Deeply. The girlies know when something is happening. You can only casually suggest a scenic walk in the river valley so many times before the internal alarm bells start ringing. But even with her little detective instincts fully online, the moment itself was still beautiful.

There is something so special about photographing a proposal because it all happens in this tiny pocket of time. One second you’re just walking together, pretending everything is normal, and the next second someone is down on one knee and your whole life has casually changed direction.

No pressure... Just your future unfolding in real time.... Totally chill.... yeah...

*ahem*

After the proposal, we took a few portraits around the river valley so they could actually soak it all in and have photos that felt relaxed, romantic, and true to them. These are the photos that get to become part of the story forever. The “this is where it started” chapter. The beginning of the engagement era. The sparkle has officially entered the chat.

If you’re planning a surprise proposal in St. Albert, Edmonton, or somewhere wildly beautiful nearby, having it photographed is such a gift. The moment goes by so fast, and having real photos of the emotion, the reaction, the ring, and the two of you right after is so worth it.

Even if she suspects.

Especially if she suspects.

Don't worry - the almost-surprise is its own kind of magic.

Planning a proposal in St. Albert, Edmonton, or somewhere beautiful in the Alberta wilds? I would be ridiculously excited to help you plan the photo part, hide in a bush if needed, and capture the whole “wait, is this actually happening?” moment.

You bring the ring. I’ll bring the camera and the emotional support chaos. 💍📸
