Sturgeon River Valley Maternity Session | Edmonton Maternity Photography
There is something especially beautiful about maternity sessions outside, surrounded by trees, tall grass, river valleys, and that soft Alberta evening light that makes everyone look like they wandered directly out of a very tasteful woodland fairytale. ✨
This maternity session along the Sturgeon River Valley was exactly that kind of magic.
The river valley gave us so many gorgeous little pockets to work with, from open skies and soft greenery to cozy trails that made everything feel quiet and intimate. And of course, we made sure that beautiful bump got the full spotlight it deserved.
Because listen - You are growing an entire human. The bump is not here to play small.
Maternity Photos That Feel Like You
You do not need to show up to maternity photos feeling like a glamorous earth goddess who has had eight hours of sleep, drank a green smoothie, and floated into the session on a cloud. (unless you want to, obviously)
You just need to show up as yourself.
Maternity photography is not about pretending this season is perfectly polished. It is about preserving the tiny details that will feel enormous later. The way your body changed. The anticipation. The softness. The excitement. The slightly surreal feeling of knowing someone new is about to join your family.
And yes, also the part where your toddler may be determined to sprint directly into the nearest bush. We welcome all forms of family chaos around here. 😂
How to Make Your Baby Bump Look More Pronounced in Photos
A lot of expecting moms worry that their bump will not “show enough” in photos, especially earlier in pregnancy or when they are wearing a looser outfit. The good news is that tiny adjustments make a huge difference.
Here are my favourite ways to help your bump look extra bumpy for maternity photos:
- Choose something fitted, or fitted in the right places
A fitted dress is always gorgeous for showing off your bump, especially one that hugs underneath the bust and follows your shape through the belly.
You do not need to wear something skin-tight if that is not your vibe. Flowy dresses can be stunning too, especially when they have a defined waistline or a spot where the fabric gathers right under the bust. The key is giving your body a little shape instead of hiding it in a giant fabric cloud.
- Turn slightly to the side
Facing straight toward the camera tends to flatten everything out a bit. For most maternity poses, I will have you turn your body slightly sideways, shift your weight into your back leg, and let your belly be the closest part of you to the camera.
Very scientific. Very glamorous. Very “hello, tiny roommate.” 🤰✨
- Pop one knee and lean back just a little
A subtle bend in your front knee and a tiny lean back through your shoulders can help create a more pronounced curve through your belly. It feels more natural than it sounds, I promise.
I will guide you through all of this during the session, so you do not need to study posing in the mirror beforehand like you are preparing for the Maternity Olympics.
- Put your hands on your bump
Hands make such a difference.
Resting one hand above your belly and one below it helps draw attention to the bump, adds connection, and gives your arms something to do besides hang there wondering about their purpose in life.
Partners can do this too. A hand on your belly, a hug from behind, or standing close with both hands around the bump creates some of the sweetest, most connected maternity photos.
- Bring a fitted backup option
Even if you love a flowy dress, it can be fun to bring a second outfit that is more fitted. A simple bodycon dress, a knit set, jeans and a snug top, or even an open button-up over a fitted tank can give us a totally different look without needing a full costume change production.
Sometimes all it takes is one outfit that lets your bump have its little red carpet moment.
A Beautiful Season Before Everything Changes
Maternity sessions are such a sweet pause before life gets louder, busier, sleepier, milkier, and somehow covered in tiny socks.
This session along the Sturgeon River Valley was full of that quiet anticipation, the kind where you can feel that a family is standing right on the edge of a brand-new chapter.
And because we also photographed their newborn session, you will absolutely want to check that one out next. Seeing the bump photos beside the photos of the actual tiny human who was kicking around in there is enough to turn me into a sentimental puddle every single time. 🥹
