To prop, or not to prop? That is the question.
And the answer is: it depends what kind of family photo magic we’re trying to make here.
Props can be adorable, meaningful, playful, and genuinely helpful during a family photoshoot. They can give your kids something to do, help everyone relax, and add a little personality to your photos.
But props can also get weird fast if they start taking over the whole session.
We want “cute family picnic in a field.”
We do not want “everyone awkwardly holding random objects because Pinterest said so in 2013.”
If you’re dreaming of playful family picnic photos with everyone snuggled on a blanket, laughing together, and dad dramatically dripping jam on his shirt like the hero of a breakfast tragedy, then yes. Bring the picnic. Bring the jam. Bring the chaos.
If you’re wanting more classic, timeless family portraits with everyone posed in front of a beautiful background, then you might not need props at all. In that case, the focus will be more on connection, flattering light, natural posing, and making sure nobody looks like they’re being held hostage by a family calendar.
Or maybe you’re somewhere in the middle.
A little classic, a little playful.
A tiny sprinkle of cozy chaos.
A fancy little blend of “please give me one nice photo for Grandma” and “also can we get the kids running barefoot through the grass like feral woodland poets?”
Beautiful. We love range.
The best props for family photos are usually the ones that feel natural to your family. A picnic blanket, bubbles, books, flowers, a cozy quilt, a favourite stuffed animal, a basket of snacks, or something seasonal can all work beautifully.
The key is to choose props that add to the story without becoming the story.
Talk to your photographer about the kind of photos you want to create, and they can help you decide whether props make sense for your session. Sometimes they’re the perfect little detail. Sometimes the best “prop” is just your family being together, laughing, snuggling, and trying to convince one toddler to stop eating grass.
Here are a few family photoshoot prop ideas that can add personality, movement, coziness, or a little extra “look at us being adorable in public” energy to your session.
Pick the ones that feel like your family, leave the rest behind, and please remember: props are seasoning, not the whole soup.
