Intro
There tends to be two different styles when it comes to family and lifestyle photography - one being what most refer to as Formal, and the other what people often call Documentary.
Formal Family Photography
Formal styles of photography tend to focus more on creating good posing, good lighting and are more about capturing people from their best angles.
You’ll find these guys in professional studios and packing around a lot of gear. They are masters of angles and being in control of each detail of the photo.
Documentary Family Photography
Documentary styles are more focused on capturing the unique dynamics and interactions of your family as they happen, regardless of the double chins or if everyone is looking at the camera.
You’ll find them hiding in bushes and encouraging natural family dynamics, such as initiating tickle fights and having dad toss the baby in the air.
Your own unique style
There’s no right or wrong with either of these styles.
Many photographers are a unique blend of the two, and it all boils down to your preference and what you want out of your photos.
However, knowing what style of photography you prefer is incredibly helpful when you’re first choosing your photographer.
